Pouilly-Fumé, often imitated and made famous by the king of the Loire, Didier Dagueneau, is a dry Sauvignon Blanc from Pouilly sur Loire that draws all its characteristics from the legendary terroir on the banks of the Loire.
It is one of the most revered wines of the Loire Valley, rivaled only by the neighboring wines of Sancerre. The name Pouilly-Fumé is composed of two parts. ‘Pouilly’ is short for Pouilly-sur-Loire, the village where the wines come from. Fumé is short for Blanc Fumé, which is the local nickname for Sauvignon Blanc.
Fumé in French means ‘smoky’ and denotes the flinty aroma that characterizes local Sauvignon Blanc wines.
This characteristic smell is often referred to as ‘pierre à fusil’, which means ‘flint’ (the literal translation is ‘gunstone’).
